About Eczema

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema or atopic eczema, is a condition that affects approximately 15 to 20 percent of children worldwide, and can affect quality of life.

It causes extremely itchy rashes and skin inflammation. Symptoms include:

  • Red and swollen skin, especially around the joints (elbows, knees, and wrists), neck and eyes
  • Asthma or nasal allergy
  • Very dry skin in the past 12 months
  • Hard and scaly skin
  • Redness, swelling, and oozing of clear liquid

It might be caused by family history, food allergies, asthma, or hay fever. Common triggers of atopic dermatitis include:

  • Aroma and chemicals: soaps, detergents, and exposure to perfumes and cosmetics
  • Fabrics and clothes: tights, wool, and synthetic fabrics
  • Environment and mood: emotional stress, exposure to foods such as dairy products and nuts, and some pollutants such as sand, dust, and smoke

Relieve eczema with these tips:

  1. Choose fragrance-free skincare products. Avoid products labelled “unscented products” as the fragrance is most likely masked.
  2. Take a 15-minute bath or shower in lukewarm water daily to hydrate the skin.
  3. When bathing, use gentle cleansers and avoid bubble baths. Gently pat away excess water to avoid aggravating the skin.
  4. Apply a moisturiser within 5 minutes of bathing to lock in the moisture.
  5. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing made from natural fibres.
  6. Sleep in surroundings with a constant temperature and humidity level.
  7. Use a hypoallergenic mattress cover and pillowcase to protect the skin from dust mites.
